The description of this Event.
|
185th consecutive monthly collection by the Smithton - Prairie du Long Townships Recycling Program, sponsored by the two townships and the Village of Smithton. Held on the first Saturday of each month in the parking lot near the tennis court in the Smithton Community Park. This program currently costs taxpayers $567 a month to process the one paper & cardboard and the two co-mingled recycling bins, regardless of the number of households participating. The more families who recycle, the more cost effective this program is in diverting waste from St. Clair County landfills.
Two types of recyclables are collected in separate receptacles.
Co-mingled items: cleaned and rinsed containers consisting of glass bottles and jars (any color), tin cans, aluminum cans and household aluminum, and plastic bottles and jugs with a #1 (soda bottles) or a #2 (milk jugs or soap bottles) Recycling Symbol stamped in the plastic.
Paper products: any paper that comes in the mail (except phonebooks) or in a Sunday newspaper (most people take their paper to either of the two schools in town, since they get paid for what they collect), as well as clean corrugated or flat cardboard boxes.
